Adrienne Withall Dr http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7079-465X University of New South Wales Sydney Sydney Australia Dr and Senior Research Fellow https://research.unsw.edu.au/people/dr-adrienne-lee-withall Cardiology inflammation, microbiome, dementia, ageing, public health, health services, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health I am the Leader of the CHAMPION Team within the School of Public Health and Comm unity Medicine at UNSW Australia and a proud descendant of the Kurial-Yuin saltwater people. Our main aim is to promote care and cognitive health in a t-risk populations. My research spans many vulnerable groups, including tho se with young onset dementia and their supporters, people with chronic drug and alcohol use, the homeless, the prison population, and those who have s ustained a head injury or concussion. Identifying risk factors to enable ea rly intervention and promote optimal care is at the forefront of this resea rch. Young onset dementia is when a person has an onset of memory loss and /or other cognitive problems prior to the age of 65. These symptoms may occ ur due to a range of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or fron totemporal dementia, or they may result from medical conditions such as mul tiple sclerosis or Huntington’s disease, or the long term effects o f lifestyle factors such as alcohol misuse or sporting injuries. The number s of people with young onset dementia seem to be increasing however there i s little known about this group. The INSPIRED Study, led by Professor Bria n Draper and myself, is examining the prevalence of young onset dementia, t he needs of this group, and we are determining a model of optimal service p rovision and care. This study is a collaboration between UNSW, the Universi ty of Sydney, and at the Prince of Wales, St Vincent’s, Sutherland and Port Kembla Hospitals. This is the largest Australian study of young on set dementia. My other studies include examining the cognitive effects, as sessment strategies and care needs of individuals with cognitive changes du e to chronic drug and alcohol abuse. We have current funded studies to inve stigate the prevalence of substance abuse in older clients and its relation ship to cognitive impairment, and also to investigate clinical and cognitiv e outcomes in long-term drug and alcohol clients. I am also interested in the ways in which sporting injuries can lead to changes in memory and think ing and the relationships between concussion and other head injuries and yo ung onset dementia (e.g. chronic traumatic encephalopathy). @DrAdrienneW 17/4/2018 101
